One Planet - BBC World Service - Listen to the program

As part of the special series of programmes, India Rising, focusing on scientific and cultural developments in modern India, One Planet visits India this week.

The programme follows attempts to introduce genetically modified crops into India.

Heralded more than 20 years ago as a way of stemming hunger and ending malnutrition, the introduction of GM into India has not been easy.

So far the only GM crop in commercial production is BT cotton.

Anti-GM activists recently brought a court action leading to the suspension of nearly all future GM trials, and farmers have burnt test fields of GM rice.

BBC Environment Correspondent Richard Black examines all sides in the GM debate. He also looks at India's own biotechnology developments, where there are hopes of producing strains of crop plants that will be able to resist the extremes of temperature expected with global climate change.
