Center for Environmental Farming Systems
The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) is an internationally recognized Center
of Excellence for Sustainable Agriculture supporting the growth of vibrant farms where healthy
products are produced in ways that steward the land and its people. CEFS is a leader in
research, innovation, and service for the agricultural community. The Center provides support
for new and transitioning farmers, contributes high quality research to the sustainable
agriculture knowledge base, and offers educational programs to local, national, and
international audiences.
Mission
The Center for Environmental Farming Systems develops and promotes food and farming systems that protect the environment, strengthen local communities, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.
History
The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) was established in 1994 by North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to serve as a center dedicated to sustainable agriculture research, extension, and education. CEFS was the result of several years of work by a task force of university faculty and administrators, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, farmers, and citizens charged with developing a strategy to build a strong sustainable agriculture program in North Carolina. Located at the Cherry Research Farm near Goldsboro, CEFS began its sustainable agriculture programming in 1996. Today, CEFS is one of the nation’s largest centers for the study of environmentally sustainable farming practices.
Objectives
Through high-quality interdisciplinary research, teaching, and extension programs, CEFS aims to:
Safeway to Globally Expand O Organics
Safeway Inc., Pleasanton, CA, recently announced it's
partnerships to sell its "O Organics" private label line in Asia
and South America, according to Marketwatch.com.
A recent deal was also struck with distributing giant Sysco Corp.
to sell the products to the foodservice segment, Safeway said.
Germany set to launch "non-GM" label
The German Agriculture Ministry is to introduce a special label for food that has not been genetically modified, in a move to create greater transparency for consumers.
Agriculture state secretary Gert Lindemann told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle that the new non-GM label will apply not only to non-genetically-modified crops but to eggs, meat and milk from animals that were raised without biotech feed.
